Services We Offer
For many people, choosing a career can be a daunting task. The Career Counselor is available to better assist you in the selection and decision making process. Various career assessments may be administered on a case-by-case basis in order to help clarify a person’s values, interest, skills, and abilities.
According to Wikipedia, Career Assessments are tools that are designed to help individuals understand how a variety of personal attributes (i.e., interest, values, preferences, motivations, aptitudes, and skills) impact their potential success and satisfaction with different career options and work environments. Honolulu Community College is committed to offering a variety of Career Assessments, depending on the individual’s needs, anticipated outcomes, and personal goals. Upon your initial meeting with the Career Counselor, a plan to address your individual needs will be developed. Please be aware that not all career assessment results are immediately available to you upon completion. We offer three different types of assessments:
- FOCUS2 is an online interactive, self guided career and education planning system designed to help you make decisions about your future career goals and education plans.
- Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a personality assessment designed to assist a person in identifying some significant personal preferences. Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers developed the Indicator during World War II, and its criteria follow from Carl Jung’s theories in his work Psychological Types.
- What is STRONG? The goal of this assessment is to give insight into a person’s interests, so that they may have less difficulty in deciding on an appropriate career choice for themselves.
Choosing a Major
Choosing a major in college can be a daunting task. Individuals typically begin their career search at a different point in their life. Every student has a different work history, personal challenges and/or obligations, as well as desired level of educational attainment. Given the notion that no two people are the same, career counselors usually look at various factors that influence a person’s decision. Through personal exploration, we will discover your values, skills; motivation; expectations; interest; passion; and work history just to name a few.
