LEARN ABOUT TECHNICAL STANDARDS
(last update Thu, Sep 6, 2007 )
Why do we have technical standards and what are they used for?
- Technical standards have been developed to help students understand the minimum mental, physical and behavioral skills necessary for participation and completion of all core aspects of a curriculum.
- Whether a student can graduate from a program is not relevant by law. Accommodations provided to students will not compromise the integrity of instruction by the college and a student is expected to demonstration the mastery of the subject matter or the final product of the activity being learned. Do not expect a double standard to apply.
What does reasonable accommodations mean?
- Students have a right to services and accommodations that will allow them to compete on an equal basis with non-disabled students. The student, however, must meet the basic requirements to perform necessary activities of the class, program or occupation. Students with disabilities may require some accommodation in order for their experiences to be equal and successful.
How can I check to see technical standards for programs I am interested in?
- Look on-line or contact the disabilities service provider at the college/university of your choice to review the standards established for the program of your interest.
