SELECT A COLLEGE DEGREE AND PROGRAM
(last update Thu, Sep 6, 2007 )
What kind of degrees do colleges offer?
  • Every college and university will identify what degrees they offer in their catalog and most will have an Internet site that will do the same. There are also books that will identify every college and university by state that offers a specific degree.

Are all degrees alike?

  • NO they aren’t. You should find out what the college says is the purpose of their degree and what courses and skills must be mastered to receive their degree. Some colleges have different emphasis that might appeal to you and the degree of difficulty of the work may also be different. Investigate before you make any decision. Compare programs and degrees.

What is a program of study?

  • These are the actual courses and the number of credits you will need to get your degree. Look at the course descriptions so you know what you will be learning.

 What is an accreditation?

  • This is a certification that the college or university has met specific standards that can be recognized by other colleges, institutions and employers. Non-accredited institutions or ones that are on probation are suspect and you should investigate the reason before applying. There are five major regional accrediting organizations. Going to a college accredited by a regionally accredited organization will insure your credits will be able to be transferred if you decide to change colleges. There are non-accredited colleges offering degrees in Hawaii so do your homework.
