OPTIONS OTHER THAN COLLEGE
(last update Thu, Sep 6, 2007)
Military Careers
- Military services include the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and the Coast Guard. Each service trains recruits to do a specific job. Many have civilian equivalents. Besides being paid while you learn, all of the services help students to attend college classes while they are on active duty.
- States such as Hawaii also have National Guard and Reserve units. You will also receive training and be obligated to serve on active duty, usually for two weeks, during the year. The rest of the time you can pursue a civilian career. Guard and Reserve units also support members attending college classes.
- When you complete a prescribed amount of service you will also be eligible to receive educational funding from the Veterans Administration. The amount you may be eligible for may be as high as $47,000.
- Many service members enjoy the military life and stay for 20 or more years and are entitled to retirement pay.
Apprenticeship Programs
Apprenticeship is a system of training in which a person learns a trade through on-the-job experience and related classroom instruction. You will have to apply to a specific union and be accepted in order to start an apprenticeship program.
- State approved apprenticeship programs are developed and operated by labor unions and/or employer organizations representing the various trades. An apprenticeship may take as little as 4,000 work process hours [2 years] for a Construction Craft Laborer to as many as 10,000 work process hours [5 years] for a Refrigeration-Air Conditioning (Pipefitter) to complete. Upon completion one is a Journeyman in his or her trade.
- Besides the work process hours, you will also have to complete a specific amount of classroom instruction. Many of the unions use Honolulu Community College for this portion of their training.
The World of Work
Many of us will go directly into the workforce. The better your high school education prepares you, the better chances are you will find work that you enjoy and that meets your financial needs.
- The average age of students at Honolulu Community College is 26. This is because many of our students return to college after they have worked for a number of years. You may find this is the path you will take as well.
