MATH AND ENGLISH BRUSHUPS
(last update Thu, Sep 6, 2007)

Why is there so much emphasis on math and English?

  • They are the foundations for being successful in all of your other subjects. Improve your math and English, and you will have the tools to improve in all your other subjects.
  • Colleges and universities use your math and English for acceptance and placement. SAT/ACT ad COMPASS tests are a test of your math and English skills. Many competency tests also use math and English as their benchmarks for success.
  • If you apply to a community college you will not be able to start taking program classes until you demonstrate an appropriate level of math and English competency. This can delay you from starting your degree program and even graduating on time.

Is there a way to catch up with my class?

  • Math and English Brush Up classes are a good way to catch up to your class or review your work before taking an examination. This is especially true with math. These classes are done over the Internet and last six weeks. They have proved a successful tool for those who have the self-discipline to work through the class.
  • You can take advantage of other activities such as tutoring, asking your teacher, friend or parents for help. If you feel you are falling behind, do something now. It gets harder to recover the longer you wait. The old saying that practice makes perfect is especially true with English. Write and read. Summarize what you read and write it down. The more you see what good writing looks like and practice it yourself, the better you will be able to do in this critical area.
