TAKE A COMPASS TEST
(last update Thu, Sep 6, 2007)
What is the COMPASS Test?
- All the community colleges in Hawaii and many other colleges on the Mainland use the COMPASS test. Instead of having students take the SAT or ACT exam, students applying to community colleges are required to take the COMPASS test.
- The COMPASS test is used to determine what level of math and English skills you have. Depending on where you place, that is where you will start taking classes in college.
Why should I be interested in it?
- Math and English are considered the two most important subjects to be successful in college. You need to do well in these subjects in high school.
- Many programs in college require that you demonstrate through the COMPASS test that you have attained a certain level of math and English competence before they let you take classes in your major. This is called meeting the program pre-requisites.
- If you take the test as a junior or senior in high school you will have a better idea of how well you are doing and the need to put more effort into these subjects.
- If you participate in Running Start you will have to take the COMPASS exam before you are allowed to take college classes.
How can I prepare for these tests?
- The best preparation is doing well in these subjects in high school. Write as often as you can and be aware of what good writing requires. Take math every year you are in high school and especially the last year. Review your math skills before you take the test.
- You can go to http://www.testprepreview.com/compass_practice.htm http://www.oaklandcc.edu/mathtest/ to learn more about the COMPASS and see examples of the type of questions and problems that are on the exam.
- You may be able to take math and English brush up classes prior to taking the test or using tutoring resources at school for specific concepts you are not sure of. Look for a schedule and contact information.
