1. Spring Activities: Activities planned for this month include a 1-day
Student Achievement Grounded in Equity (SAGE) workshop at Windward CC on
Saturday, March 19, followed by a Train-the-Trainer SAGE workshop here at
Honolulu CC on Thursday, March 24. These workshop are being funded by
Perkins Professional Development funds and Wo Learning Champions Program
funds. Although Gwen Fujie will not be presenting her Tongue Fu workshop
here at Honolulu CC, there will be two on Oahu during the month of April.
She will be presenting at Kapiolani CC of April 8 and at Windward CC on
April 29. These are sponsored and funded by the Wo Learning Champions
Program . Reg Wood will be presenting a workshop and discussion here at
Honolulu on April 5 on prescription drugs and problems that students might
present in the classroom because of them. Jerry distributed a flyer for an
upcoming New York Times Knowledge Network workshop taking place on April
15. A presenter from the paper will offer this workshop to encourage
faculty members to incorporate the New York Times Newspaper in their
classes. Lunch will be served to encourage attendance. A possible
presenter from the Wo Speaker's Bureau will be scheduled and co-sponsored
with the Native Hawaiian Center yet this semester.
2. Faculty Development Foundation Account: The committee members approved
using Faculty Development Foundation funds to pay for a lei and
refreshments at an upcoming workshop co-sponsored by the Committee on
Social Equity and the Faculty Development Committee. Ah Quon MacElrath
will be the presenter and it will take place on April 14 at 3:00 pm.
3. Wo Learning Champions: Honolulu CC's 4th generation Wo Learning
Champion has been selected. The Wo Project and Faculty Development
Committee collaborate on several professional development activities
throughout the year.
4. Excellence in Education Day: Jerry summarized the activities of the
Excellence in Education day held the past Friday, March 4. He stated that
a final report will be presented at the Campus Leadership Team meeting
this coming Monday. Activities of the day were discussed. Dolores shared
information about the wonderful excursion to Bob Eddinger's house and
gardens.
New Business
1. End-of-year letter/email - Jerry asked all members to send him a short
letter or email later toward the end of the semester containing a
reflection of how this year went for Faculty Development and offering
suggestions for improvement next year. He will include these in the
end-of-year report he submits to FSEC and the Chancellor. He also asked
those who are serving on the committee for the first year to ask for and
anticipate serving for a second year.
2. Professional Development Awards: The committee members have received
fewer dollar amount requests than money left to award this semester. It
was decided that $1200 be the maximum award for this semester only. Only
one application to attend the Hawaii Great Teachers Seminar has been
received. It was also decided to fund three for the seminar and efforts
would be made to find two other colleagues to attend. Names, amounts and
descriptions of the funded activities are available from the Coordinator
upon request.
Open Discussion
1. Jerry stated that the Excellence in Teaching Committee has no member
interested in leading the effort to have an after-graduation party this
year. Tom Mikulski, member of that committee, had discussions with
Ramsey, and Ramsey was to report this to his executive staff for possible
leadership for a party.
The next meeting is scheduled for Friday, May 6, at 9:00 am, at Jeannie's
apprenticeship training facility at Pearl Harbor. Jerry, who has base
pass privileges, will drive and take the others.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:00 am.
