I was born and raised in Hawaii. Both of my grandmothers are Hawaiian and I was fortunate to live with one and plant kalo (taro) at a very young age. I am still planting kalo in Kahana Valley in the Ko‘olauloa moku (district), making poi for the ‘ohana and community. I started teaching Hawaiian Studies in Fall 2003, and I currently teach Geography of Hawai‘i and Hawaiian Studies at Honolulu Community College. I work part-time for Ka Papa Lo‘i o Kānewai cultural garden at UH. I help with lessons for the DOE high schools on implementing Hawaiian Cultural curriculum into the STEM classes. I currently serve on the State of Hawai‘i Taro Purity and Security Task Force and have been visiting all the kalo growing communities around the islands.
